India's Muted Response to China's Massive Dam Project
China is building a huge dam in Tibet, which could affect the Brahmaputra River that flows into India.
Even though India has been worried about this for a long time, they haven't reacted strongly.
This is because India knows that most of the water in the Brahmaputra comes from their side.
Also, the new dam isn't the same as a dam on the main river.
The Chinese plan uses tunnels to move water through the mountains.
India is also planning to build its own dams, and building dams is a big deal for both countries.
China began construction of the Yarlung Zangbo Lower Reaches Hydropower Project in Tibet, the world's largest hydroelectric project.
India's response to the project has been muted despite long-standing concerns about its impact on the Brahmaputra River.
A key reason for the muted response is that most of the Brahmaputra's water comes from the Indian side.
The project is located in a mountainous area, and will utilize tunnels to divert water through the Namcha Barwa mountain.
The construction of the Chinese dam is influencing India's dam-building efforts along the Brahmaputra.
