Chamoli tunnel flood: seven workers dead, rescue operations continue
In a town called Pipalkoti in India, a tunnel was being built to help make electricity from a river.
On Thursday evening, water and rocks suddenly rushed into the tunnel while workers were inside, and some workers got stuck.
Different reports say different numbers of people were trapped, so nobody is completely sure how many.
Rescue teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Army and other groups worked very fast to bring workers out safely.
Some reports say 16 or 18 workers were rescued, while another said only 10.
Sadly, some workers died, but the reports disagree about how many — one says seven, one says four, and one says nine.
Workers who came out were taken to hospitals in Gopeshwar and Pipalkoti, and most were reported stable.
Special teams even brought dogs to help search for people still inside.
The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, told everyone to rescue the workers as fast as possible.
Rescuers are still searching for the people who remain inside the tunnel, and the cause of the flood is not yet known.
Water and debris flooded an under-construction THDC hydroelectric tunnel at Pipalkoti in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, on Thursday, trapping workers.
Trapped-worker figures conflict: the state government reported 18-19 workers trapped around 7 pm, while officials elsewhere cited around 20-25, 22, or 28.
Rescue counts vary by report: 16 rescued with 3 feared trapped, 18 rescued with 4-5 still inside, or 10 rescued with 15 feared trapped.
Fatality figures also conflict: 7 of 19 brought to Gopeshwar district hospital were declared dead, another report said 9 of 22 evacuated workers died, and a third said 4 of 22 died.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered a war-footing rescue with NDRF, SDRF, CISF, ITBP, Army, police and Garhwal Scouts; the cause is unconfirmed, with a landslide or landslide-like event near the Birhi River reported.
