Meta Expands AI Infrastructure with Nuclear Deals

Meta Expands AI Infrastructure with Nuclear Deals

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, has made big deals to buy a lot of nuclear energy.

They are working with three companies to get 6.6 gigawatts of power by 2035.

This is enough to power 5 million homes.

Meta needs this energy to run its big AI computers, called data centers.

The company is betting on nuclear power because it is clean and always available, unlike solar or wind.

The deals include buying power from existing plants and investing in new, smaller nuclear reactors that are still being developed.

This move is part of a bigger trend where tech companies are investing in nuclear energy to support their AI projects.

The stock prices of the companies involved, like Vistra and Oklo, went up because of these deals.

However, there are some risks, like the new reactors not being approved yet and the high cost of nuclear power compared to other sources.

Additionally, Meta is cutting 1,500 jobs in its Reality Labs division as it shifts focus from the metaverse to AI.

Meta has also announced a new initiative called 'Meta Compute' to build AI infrastructure and oversee its global fleet of data centers.

This initiative will be led by Santosh Janardhan and Daniel Gross, with Dina Powell McCormick joining as president and vice chairman.
