Indian IT Firms Hit by Labor Costs
Five big Indian IT companies had to spend a lot of money because of new rules about how they pay their workers.
These rules say that at least half of a worker's pay must be their basic salary, which means the companies have to pay more into things like retirement funds.
This cost the companies about $500 million in just three months.
The biggest company, TCS, had to spend the most, but they say this won't keep happening.
Other companies think they might have to keep spending a little more money because of these rules.
But they all say it won't stop them from hiring more people.
The new rules also make sure workers get written job offers and get paid on time, which is good for them.
India's five largest IT services companies faced $500 million in upfront costs due to new labor codes.
TCS incurred the highest costs at $238 million, with Infosys, HCLTech, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra following.
The labor codes mandate that basic pay must account for at least 50% of total compensation, increasing statutory payouts.
The new rules reduced the companies' profitability by 260-320 basis points in the December 2025 quarter.
Companies have differing views on the recurring impact, with Infosys expecting a 15 basis points ongoing impact, while others see minimal or no continued effect.
