Prime Minister Research Chair 2026: Eligibility and Application Details
The Indian government has started a new program called the Prime Minister Research Chair.
It invites researchers who were born in India or have Indian roots and have worked abroad for at least five years after their PhD.
These researchers can come to India and work at top universities or research labs for up to five years.
They will do important research, teach students, and help companies use new ideas.
The program gives them money for research, a place to live, medical help, and support to move to India.
The deadline to apply is 15 August 2026.
Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) 2026 is a flagship Indian government scheme to embed Indian-origin researchers in premier Indian institutions for high‑impact research, teaching, and mentorship.
Applications are open to Indian nationals, Overseas Citizens of India, and Persons of Indian Origin with at least 5 years of post‑PhD experience abroad, and the deadline has been extended to 15 August 2026.
The scheme offers three engagement levels: Young Research Fellows (≤5 years post‑PhD), Senior Fellows (5–<10 years), and Research Chairs (≥10 years), each with a maximum five‑year tenure.
Fellows will conduct original research, design courses, mentor students, foster international collaborations, and work with industry partners to commercialise outcomes.
The fellowship covers a research grant, residential and medical allowances, relocation benefits, and requires periodic progress reports to an Empowered Committee.
