India Plans US Javelin Purchase, Signaling Deeper Defence Ties

India wants to buy a missile system called the Javelin from the United States.

The system is designed to attack armoured vehicles and fortified positions.

One person can carry the complete system.

A soldier locks onto a target before firing.

After launch, the missile guides itself, allowing the soldier to move or take cover.

The missile can fly over a vehicle and strike its less-protected top.

It can also be fired from some enclosed places, such as buildings or bunkers.

The deal is being described as a possible step toward closer defence cooperation and future joint production, although reports differ on whether the purchase is only planned or has formally been agreed.
