India’s Retail Inflation Rises Above RBI Midpoint for Third Month

Prices in India increased faster in August than they had in recent months.

Retail inflation reached 4.82%, mainly because food and fuel became more expensive.

This was the third month in a row that inflation was above the Reserve Bank of India’s 4% midpoint goal.

Inflation is still inside the bank’s allowed range of 2% to 6%.

Higher oil prices, linked to fighting and shipping worries in West Asia, are adding to costs.

Experts expect food prices could rise further if the monsoon is weak.

The central bank has not raised interest rates and is waiting to see what happens.

Higher rates could slow price increases but might also reduce economic growth.
