Supreme Court Pushes for Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centres
Justice Gita Mittal, who is the head of a special committee set up by the Supreme Court of India, talked about the need for special rooms in courts called Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centres (VWDC).
These centres are meant to help children, people with disabilities, and victims of abuse feel safe when they have to give their testimony in court.
She said these rooms should have toys, games, and books, and should be separate from the main court area.
They should also have special measures like screens, interpreters, and support persons to make sure the witnesses can give their testimony without feeling scared or threatened.
She also talked about the need for trained staff and the importance of following guidelines from around the world to ensure a fair trial for both the witness and the accused.
Justice Gita Mittal emphasized the need for Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centres (VWDC) in all courts to provide a safe environment for vulnerable witnesses.
VWDCs should have child-friendly features like toys, games, and books, and should be separate from the main court area.
Special measures like screens, interpreters, support persons, and non-intimidating video-conferencing should be used to ensure fair testimony.
Trained staff, including judges and counselors, should be able to handle vulnerable individuals, specifically children and sexual assault victims.
Guidelines from the United Nations, international instruments, and judicial precedents from various countries should be followed to ensure a fair trial for both the witness and the accused.
