NUCFDC Seeks Self-Regulatory Status for Urban Cooperative Banks
Imagine all the small banks that help people in cities save and borrow money.
A big organization called NUCFDC wants to be like a helpful older sibling to these banks.
They are trying to gather enough money to show the main bank regulator, the RBI, that they can be in charge of making sure these smaller banks follow the rules.
If they get this special status, they can help the smaller banks with things like technology and even lend them money when they need it.
They have already created new digital tools to make payments and loans easier.
Many of these smaller banks are already working with NUCFDC, and they represent most of the money saved in this type of banking.
This will help NUCFDC be a stronger voice for all the city cooperative banks.
NUCFDC aims to secure Self-Regulatory Organisation (SRO) status from the RBI for the urban cooperative banking sector within two months.
The organization expects to exceed the ₹300 crore paid-up capital threshold by November, enabling its application for SRO status.
Upon achieving SRO status, NUCFDC will act as the primary regulatory body for urban cooperative banks (UCBs) under RBI's oversight.
NUCFDC will launch fund-based services, including loans, Tier 2 capital support, and liquidity facilities for participating UCBs after meeting capital requirements.
The corporation has introduced digital solutions, Sahakar Digipay and Sahakar Digiloan, to modernize payment and lending operations across UCBs.
