Windows 10 Discontinued: Free Security Updates Available
Windows 10, the operating system used by many computers, will stop receiving security updates soon.
This means your computer might become vulnerable to viruses.
To keep your computer safe, Microsoft is offering two options: paying for updates or using a free method.
The free method involves backing up your computer's files to Microsoft's online storage, OneDrive, to keep getting updates.
This helps protect computers that aren't ready to switch to the newer Windows 11.
This is happening because Windows 10 is getting old, and Microsoft is focusing on newer products.
Microsoft is discontinuing security support for Windows 10 in October.
Users can pay for an Extended Security Update (ESU) or use a free cloud-based alternative.
The free alternative involves backing up devices to OneDrive to continue receiving updates.
Windows 10 still powers over 53% of PCs as of May 2025.
Microsoft will start the sign-up process for the ESU program in July.
