Trump Floats ‘Lake America’ Amid Deepening U.S.-Canada Trade Rift

Donald Trump suggested giving Lake Ontario a new name: “Lake America.”

He connected the idea to the United States doing less business with Ontario.

Canadian officials mostly ignored or dismissed the comment.

The proposal came during a growing trade disagreement between the United States and Canada.

The United States placed tariffs, which are extra taxes, on Canadian products.

Trump also threatened more tariffs on Canadian cars, car parts and steel.

Canada planned to respond with tariffs or other measures of its own.

The countries also disagree about rules protecting French-language content in Quebec.

Businesses, workers and shoppers could face problems if the trade fight continues.
