Sikh Coalition Addresses English Proficiency Rules for Truckers
Imagine the government made a new rule that truck drivers need to speak good English to do their jobs safely.
A group called the Sikh Coalition is worried this might unfairly affect Sikh and Punjabi drivers.
They want to make sure everyone is treated fairly when their English is checked.
The Coalition is also asking for ways for drivers to improve their English and get back to work if they need to.
They want the rules to be fair and not treat anyone differently because of their background, and ensure that the rules are made in a way that doesn't cause discrimination.
These rules are changing because of an order from the US President.
Sikh Coalition sent a letter to the US Department of Transportation regarding English proficiency rules for truckers.
The letter addresses concerns about potential discrimination against Sikh and Punjabi drivers.
The executive order mandates English proficiency for safe driving, including reading signs and communicating with officials.
The Sikh Coalition seeks fair assessment of English skills and a path for drivers to regain their careers after improvement.
The Department of Transportation is expected to release new guidance by the end of June.
