8th Pay Commission and Labour Codes
The Indian government has announced the 8th Pay Commission to update the salaries and pensions of central government employees.
This process will take a while, with the final report expected by April 2027 and implementation likely in late 2027 or early 2028.
The government has also introduced new Labour Codes that change how certain benefits like the Provident Fund (PF) are calculated.
The Ministry of Labour & Employment has clarified that these new codes will not reduce the take-home pay of employees, as PF deductions will still be based on a wage ceiling of ₹15,000.
Any additional contributions beyond this limit are optional.
The 8th Pay Commission aims to suggest a fitment factor that could increase the minimum salary of employees, but the exact hike will depend on the commission's recommendations and financial constraints.
The 8th Pay Commission was announced on January 16, 2025, and its terms of reference were finalized on October 28, 2025.
The commission has 18 months to submit its report, which is due around April 2027, with implementation expected in late 2027 or early 2028.
The new Labour Codes, notified on November 21, 2025, standardize the definition of wages and require companies to rework their CTC structures.
The Ministry of Labour & Employment has clarified that the new Labour Codes will not reduce take-home pay, as PF deductions remain based on the statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000.
The 8th Pay Commission is expected to suggest a fitment factor that could raise the minimum salary of central government employees from ₹18,000 to between ₹32,940 and ₹44,280.
