India’s Space Ambitions Expand From Moon to Mars, Venus

India celebrates National Space Day every August 23 because its Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft successfully landed on the Moon.

India was the first country to reach the Moon’s south pole and one of only four countries to make a soft lunar landing.

Its space program is also studying the Sun through the Aditya L1 mission.

India reached Mars on its first attempt with the Mangalyaan spacecraft.

It has tested docking two spacecraft together with the SpaDeX mission.

An Indian astronaut, Shubhanshu Shukla, visited the International Space Station in 2025.

India is also working with NASA on the NISAR Earth-observation mission.

In the future, India plans to build a space station, return samples from the Moon and send astronauts to the Moon.

It also plans to explore Venus and continue studying Mars.
