TMC Meets ECI Amid Election Tensions
A group of leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, India, will meet with the top election official, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), to talk about some concerns they have.
They are worried about a process called the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which they say is causing a lot of stress and even suicides among the people working on it.
They also think the process might not be fair.
On the other hand, the opposition leader, Suvendu Adhikari, has written to the CEC saying that some police officers are supporting the current chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, and this could make the upcoming elections unfair.
He wants these officers to be removed from election duty.
The TMC says Adhikari is making false claims and that the police have the right to support any party.
The CEC has agreed to meet with the TMC leaders to discuss these issues.
Ten TMC MPs will meet the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on 28 November to discuss concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
TMC leaders, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, have raised questions about the transparency and human cost of the SIR exercise, citing suicides among Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the Bengal Assembly, has lodged a complaint with the ECI alleging that a state-level police conference in Digha turned into a platform for political propaganda for the TMC.
Adhikari claimed that senior police officers openly endorsed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's return to power, violating the model code of conduct and raising doubts about their neutrality during elections.
The ECI has referred the matter to the panel responsible for strengthening communication with political parties and is committed to maintaining open and transparent channels of communication with all stakeholders.
