China Sacks Four Professors in Sweeping Academic Misconduct Crackdown

China has begun a major effort to find and punish dishonest research.

The country’s science foundation announced 31 cases involving more than 40 researchers.

Four well-known professors lost their jobs and research honors.

Their funding was canceled, and they were ordered to return more than 10 million yuan.

They also cannot apply for some new funding for three to seven years.

The cases became public after blogger and former PhD student Student Geng raised concerns online.

President Xi Jinping had called for stronger action against academic misconduct.

The government wants research to be trustworthy as China continues increasing research spending.
