Iran Challenges US Aviation Restrictions, Seeks Restored Flight Routes

Iran says US restrictions are making it harder for Iranian planes to operate.

Iran has asked the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO, to help remove these barriers.

It also says it is using courts and diplomacy to restore canceled flight routes.

Some passengers now connect through regional airports such as Istanbul to reach Europe.

Iran says it complained to the International Court of Justice about attacks on aviation facilities and equipment.

The United States says its sanctions target aviation companies that support Iran's government.

The US also says some airlines are used to move weapons, personnel and illegal cargo.

Iran wants international organizations and other countries to help restore its air connections.
