India’s Saffron Jersey Row Grows After Blue-Kit Defeats
India’s hockey team usually wears blue jerseys, but it switched to saffron for the World Cup.
Hockey India said blue might be hard to see against the blue playing surface.
Some players and coaches supported this explanation.
However, England wore light blue when it beat India 4-2.
The Netherlands also wore light blue when it beat India’s women’s team 2-0.
Both matches were played on blue artificial turf.
This made people wonder whether India really needed to change its color.
The losses were decided by hockey skills and performance, not by jersey color.
The results simply brought new attention to the jersey debate.
Hockey India changed India’s traditional blue kit to saffron, citing visibility concerns on blue artificial turf.
England defeated India 4-2 in a light-blue kit after India had taken a 2-1 lead.
The Netherlands beat India 2-0 while also wearing light blue on the same type of surface.
Critics question why light blue was acceptable for other teams but India’s blue was considered unsuitable.
Players and coaches defended the switch, while the defeats themselves were not attributed to jersey color.
