Gold Rises as October Fed Rate Hike Bets Fade
Gold prices went up a little on Monday.
New U.S. jobs data showed that hiring had slowed, and earlier job figures were revised downward.
This made traders less sure that the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates in October.
Gold can become more appealing when people expect rates not to rise, because gold does not pay interest.
Traders still expected a rate increase could happen in December.
A market analyst said that the Fed’s wider plan to raise rates was still seen as active.
Events in the Middle East could also affect gold, partly through their effect on oil prices and inflation.
Silver, platinum, and palladium prices also rose, while oil prices fell.
Spot gold rose 0.4% to $4,158.17 per ounce, while U.S. gold futures gained 0.6% to $4,186.40.
Weaker-than-expected September job growth and downward revisions to earlier payroll figures reduced expectations of an October Federal Reserve rate hike.
Traders put the probability of an October hike at 22%, down from 64% a week earlier, while pricing an 87% chance of a December increase.
An analyst said softer labor data supported gold but noted that markets still viewed the Fed’s broader rate-hiking cycle as intact.
Yemen’s government announced a campaign against Houthi-controlled areas; other precious metals also rose, while oil prices slipped.
