Adoor Gopalakrishnan Remembers Ritwik Ghatak's Teachings at KIFF
A famous filmmaker named Adoor Gopalakrishnan talked about his old teacher, Ritwik Ghatak, at a movie event in Kolkata.
He said Ghatak was a very inspiring but unusual professor at a film school.
Adoor remembered how Ghatak didn't always follow the rules, making his own films and even other students' films because he loved directing so much.
He explained that Ghatak was different from another famous director, Satyajit Ray, who was very careful and planned everything.
Adoor said that even though they made movies differently, Ray and Ghatak admired each other.
Ghatak taught Adoor important things about using sounds in movies, like adding noises that weren't originally there to make a scene more powerful.
Adoor also mentioned that Ghatak's amazing films weren't shown much when he was alive but became famous after he passed away.
Adoor, who is now 84, also hinted that he might make a new movie soon.
Adoor Gopalakrishnan fondly remembered his former professor Ritwik Ghatak at the Kolkata International Film Festival.
Gopalakrishnan highlighted Ghatak's unique teaching style, focusing on analyzing his own films and his passionate, hands-on approach to directing.
He clarified that Ghatak and Satyajit Ray admired each other, despite having different filmmaking methods, with Ray coming from painting and Ghatak from theatre.
Gopalakrishnan credited Ghatak with teaching him the significant use of sound in cinema and the impact of abrupt cuts.
The filmmaker hinted at his own potential return to directing after a long hiatus.
