India Gains UNSC Backing, But Permanent Seat Remains Elusive

The United Nations Security Council helps deal with threats to peace around the world.

It has 15 members, including five permanent members with special veto powers.

India wants to become a permanent member because it is a large and influential country.

India also says the Council does not fairly represent today’s world, especially developing countries.

Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic recently supported India’s request.

The United States, United Kingdom, France and Russia have also backed India.

China supports changing the Council but has not clearly supported India’s permanent seat.

Some countries want new permanent members to have no veto, but India disagrees.

Changing the Council would require a difficult amendment to the UN Charter.
