Agnipath Scheme Protests: Youths Await Justice
In 2022, many young people in Uttar Pradesh, India, protested against a new rule called the Agnipath scheme.
This rule said that people joining the Army would only work for four years, and only a few would get to stay longer.
The protesters were angry because they wanted stable government jobs.
During the protests, some people were arrested and charged with crimes like damaging property and fighting with the police.
Now, the government is reviewing these cases to see if the charges should be dropped.
Many of the young people involved say they were wrongly accused and hope to have their lives back on track.
Some have given up on joining the Army and are looking for other jobs or ways to support their families.
51 cases were filed in 15 districts of Uttar Pradesh during the 2022 protests against the Agnipath scheme.
Hundreds of youths were accused of damaging property and fighting with the police, with charges including rioting and assault.
The Agnipath scheme offers four-year short-term contracts, with only 25% of recruits retained permanently.
The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated a review of the cases, with district authorities instructed to submit reports.
Many of the accused youths claim they were falsely implicated and are hoping for the charges to be withdrawn to rebuild their lives.
