First LNG-Based Power Plant in Andaman Islands Nears Completion
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are getting their first LNG-based power plant.
This plant, which is 55 MW in capacity, is being built by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN).
The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) will supply the LNG.
The plant has already received environmental clearance and is now in the final stages of approval.
The project aims to reduce the islands' reliance on diesel, which is not as clean.
The new LNG plant is expected to produce much less pollution, making the air cleaner.
The plant will use a Floating Storage and Re-gassification Unit (FSRU) to supply gas to the power plant.
This project is part of the government's plan to use cleaner energy sources.
The first LNG-based power plant in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is nearing completion, with the final clearance process underway.
The 55 MW power plant is being implemented by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN) and will be supplied with LNG by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).
The project aims to reduce the islands' dependence on diesel-based power generation, moving towards cleaner energy sources.
The plant has already obtained Environmental Clearance (EC) from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) in September 2022.
The project includes the installation of a 0.07 MMTPA capacity gas (LNG) supply infrastructure (FSRU) and is expected to release 60-90% less smog-producing pollutants and 30-40% less greenhouse gases.
