Bombay High Court frees 2006 kidnap-murder convict on reformation grounds

A man did a very bad thing many years ago — in 2006, he helped kidnap and hurt a law student named Mandar in Goa.

He was sentenced to life in prison.

While in jail, the man decided to change his life.

He took college courses through a university called IGNOU and earned three degrees.

He also worked in the prison, helping run the canteen and the bakery.

After he had been in prison for more than 14 years, a special board said he could be released early because he had become a better person.

But the government of Goa said no, because the crime was very serious and people were worried about safety.

A big court called the Bombay High Court said the government was not being fair.

The judges explained that prison is not only for punishment — it is also for helping people improve and return to society.

So the court decided that the man should be set free.
