NIA arrests Bengal imam over suspected terror links

NIA arrests Bengal imam over suspected terror links

India’s National Investigation Agency arrested a mosque imam named Piar Mohammad Sheikh in West Bengal.

The agency suspects he may have links to terrorist networks.

Investigators searched the room where he lived and took a diary and a mobile phone.

They reportedly found phone numbers belonging to several Bangladeshis in the diary.

Sheikh was brought to a police station for questioning.

Some villagers were surprised because they did not know of any alleged terror connections.

Other local people said he often traveled to Bangladesh and had recently stayed there for about six months.

The NIA is also examining possible sleeper cells linked to Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh.

Officials have not said whether his arrest is connected to other raids in West Bengal.
