Rewilding Banni Grassland Can Empower the Maldhari Community

Rewilding Banni Grassland Can Empower the Maldhari Community

In the state of Gujarat, there is a big grassland called Banni.

For many generations, a group of people called the Maldharis have lived there with their animals.

They know the land very well, including its grass, water, and wildlife.

The grassland is not fully healthy because invasive plants have taken over and the soil is weak.

Some people think we have to choose between helping wild animals and helping local herders.

This story says we do not have to choose — we can help both at the same time.

The Gujarat Forest Department and a group called Vantara are fixing the land by planting good grass and cleaning away bad plants.

The Maldharis also help by sharing what they know about the land.

When everyone works together, the grassland becomes healthier, animals come back, and the herders' animals have plenty to eat.

That way, the land and the people both win.
