Cabinet Approves Dissolution of 37-Year-Old Digital Telecom Commission

India is dissolving a government group that helped make telecom decisions.

The group was created in 1989 and was first called the Telecom Commission.

It was renamed the Digital Communications Commission in 2018.

The group helped prepare telecom policies and budgets.

Officials said some of its work overlaps with other telecom officials.

The finance ministry now handles budget approvals for telecom projects and schemes.

The commission recently approved most recommendations about spectrum for satellite internet services.

Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications have permission to offer services, but they still need spectrum and another security clearance.
