KMC Restricts High-Rise Construction Amid Aviation Rule Changes
The government is telling building companies in and around Kolkata to stop building tall buildings for now.
They are waiting for new rules from the people in charge of airplanes about how tall buildings can be near airports.
Buildings can't be taller than about nine stories or 25.5 meters.
The rules are about making sure buildings don't get in the way of planes.
It's not clear what will happen to buildings that are already being built.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has been told not to permit new buildings exceeding 25.5m.
The urban development department is awaiting clarity on new rules from the civil aviation ministry.
Other municipal bodies in Bidhannagar, Dum Dum, and New Town have also been instructed not to permit high-rises.
The ministry published draft Aircraft (Demolition of Obstructions caused by Buildings and Trees etc) Rules, 2025.
The height restrictions are based on the distance from the airport and the Behala flying club.
