Over 10,000 STEM PhDs Left Federal Jobs Since Trump
Since President Trump took office, over 10,000 scientists and experts with PhDs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) or health fields left their jobs in the federal government.
This is about 14% of all STEM PhDs working for the government.
Some agencies, like the National Science Foundation (NSF), lost a lot more of these experts than others.
The main reasons people left include retiring, quitting because they disagreed with policies, or taking buyout offers.
At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 16% of the STEM PhDs who left were let go because of reductions in force.
This big change in the workforce could affect how the government does research and other important work.
Over 10,000 STEM PhDs left federal jobs since Trump took office, representing 14% of the total STEM PhD workforce.
Research roles were hit particularly hard, especially at NSF, EPA, the Department of Energy, and USFS.
NSF lost 40% of its STEM PhD workforce, reducing the percentage of STEM PhDs in its workforce from 30% to 26%.
Most departures were due to retirements, quitting, policy disagreements, buyout offers, or fear of being fired.
At the CDC, 16% of the 519 STEM PhDs who left received pink RIF slips, the highest percentage of any agency.
