Kainchi Dham Plans Char Dham-Style Registration Amid Visitor Surge
Kainchi Dham is a shrine in Uttarakhand that has been receiving many more visitors.
On busy weekends, large crowds and traffic jams can make travel difficult for pilgrims and local people.
The district administration wants to ask the state government to create a registration system, similar to one used for the Char Dham pilgrimage.
At first, the system would be used on weekends.
It could help officials know how many people plan to visit and manage the crowds.
Officials say a new online portal may take about a month to develop.
They are also working on a bypass road to help traffic travelling through the area avoid the road to the shrine.
The rise in visits has been associated with the end of the monsoon and a film about Neem Karoli Baba.
Nainital district officials plan to recommend a visitor-registration system for Kainchi Dham, initially for weekends.
District Magistrate Lalit Mohan Rayal said the proposal will be sent to the state Tourism Department in a joint report with the Senior Superintendent of Police.
The system would adapt Uttarakhand’s Char Dham model to estimate daily arrivals and manage crowds; a portal could take about a month to develop.
Rayal said daily attendance, normally around 25,000, exceeded 35,000 during the long weekend beginning October 2, contributing to hours-long traffic jams.
The Forest Department has permitted the 18-kilometre Ratighat bypass; about eight kilometres have been hot-mixed, and the government is considering Rs 21 crore for the remaining stretch.
