Somali Piracy Resurges as 13 Vessels Are Targeted in 2026

Pirates near Somalia have started attacking ships again after several quiet years.

At least 13 commercial ships were attacked or targeted by August 21, 2026.

Six ships were seized between April and July.

The newest reported seizure involved a tanker called Sibu 1 near Yemen.

International naval forces had previously reduced piracy in the area.

Experts say the problems that helped piracy begin in Somalia were never fully fixed.

They also say expensive oil can make tankers more attractive targets.

Some naval forces have moved elsewhere to respond to threats near Iran and Yemen.

Experts have also reported possible cooperation between Houthi fighters and Somali pirates.
