Readers Seek Safety in Fictional Worlds They Can Live In
Cozy fantasy is a kind of story that feels warm and safe.
Instead of focusing mainly on battles, it often follows people building peaceful lives.
One important example is “Legends & Lattes,” about an orc who opens a coffee shop.
The story helped make cozy fantasy widely popular in 2022.
Other books feature magical houses, orphanages, and families formed by friendship.
These stories often include cottages, warm drinks, and everyday magic.
Readers enjoy feeling as if they can visit and stay in these fictional places.
Problems may happen, but the whole world usually does not fall apart.
Cozy fantasy has grown rapidly since Travis Baldree’s 2022 novel “Legends & Lattes.”
The genre centers on low-stakes stories that offer comfort, safety, and welcoming settings.
Popular examples include “The House in the Cerulean Sea” and “The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches.”
Common features include domestic magic, found family, warm drinks, and cottagecore homes.
Earlier influences include Diana Wynne Jones, Studio Ghibli, and Becky Chambers’s gentler science-fiction worlds.
