New Bornagar Power Hub to Reduce Northeast's Reliance on Bongaigaon
A new power hub is being built in Bornagar, Assam, to make the electricity supply in the Northeast more reliable.
Right now, most of the power comes through the Bongaigaon substation, which is in a flood-prone area.
If something goes wrong there, it could cause big power outages.
The new Bornagar hub will provide an alternative route for electricity, making the system stronger and more stable.
This will help both cities and villages get a steady supply of power.
The project is part of a bigger plan to improve electricity infrastructure in the Northeast.
It will also help reduce the cost of electricity for people over time.
Right now, the government is in the process of acquiring the land needed for the new substation.
A new 765/400/220 kV power hub is being constructed at Bornagar to reduce the Northeast's dependence on the Bongaigaon substation.
The Bongaigaon substation is currently the primary gateway for electricity flow into the Northeast, posing a systemic risk due to its flood-prone location.
The Bornagar facility will initially operate as a 400 kV switching station with provisions for future upgrades.
The project will create an alternative corridor for power flow from Eastern India into the Northeast, improving grid reliability.
The initiative is part of the North Eastern States Strengthening Scheme (NESS) to meet rising demand and lower technical losses.
