Kolkata Metro Uses Regenerative Braking to Cut Emissions
Imagine trains that can generate their own electricity when they slow down!
That's what the Kolkata Metro is doing.
They use a special system called regenerative braking that captures the energy normally lost when a train stops and turns it back into electricity.
This saves money and helps the environment by reducing the use of fossil fuels.
The metro has already saved a lot of money and reduced pollution.
They are also building a big battery system to store extra energy, which is a first for Indian Railways.
Kolkata Metro Railway implements regenerative braking to cut emissions and costs.
The technology converts kinetic energy back into electricity during braking.
37 rakes currently use the system, saving ₹8.2 crore in energy costs in 2024-25.
Regenerative braking reduced carbon emissions by 13,500 tonnes in the last financial year.
A 4-MW battery storage system is being set up, first of its kind in Indian Railways.
