Parliament Debates SIR, Vote Chori Allegations
In the Lok Sabha, there was a big discussion about how elections are run in India.
The BJP, led by Home Minister Amit Shah, said that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is a normal process to clean up the voter list by removing names of people who have died or are not citizens.
They said this has been happening since 1952 under different governments.
The opposition, led by Rahul Gandhi, accused the BJP of using SIR to remove certain people from the voter list to win elections unfairly.
They also said the Election Commission is not independent anymore and is working with the BJP.
Another opposition leader, Asaduddin Owaisi, said SIR is like a backdoor NRC (National Register of Citizens) and is being used to stop people from voting based on their religion.
The BJP said the opposition is just upset because they are losing elections.
The discussion got quite heated, with both sides accusing each other of not telling the truth.
BJP defends SIR as a constitutional exercise to clean up electoral rolls, removing deceased individuals and foreign nationals.
Opposition, including Rahul Gandhi and Asaduddin Owaisi, alleges SIR is a backdoor NRC and violates parliamentary legislation.
Gandhi accuses the BJP of colluding with the Election Commission to commit 'vote chori' and demands a debate on his press conferences.
Shah argues that SIR has been conducted under various governments since 1952 and denies any wrongdoing.
Opposition raises concerns about changes in the law, such as the removal of the CJI from the EC selection panel and the destruction of CCTV footage after 45 days.
