High Court Concerned Over Delay in UP Panchayat Elections

High Court Concerned Over Delay in UP Panchayat Elections

In India, villages and towns choose their local leaders through elections called panchayat elections.

The Constitution says these local councils must have new elections every five years.

The panchayats in the state of Uttar Pradesh did not get new elections in time.

Their five-year term ended on May 26, 2026.

Some judges at the Allahabad High Court are worried about this delay.

They said the state government should start preparing for elections at least two years before the old council's term ends.

The government started the election process in May 2025, but it was still not enough time.

The judges want to find out why the elections were late.

They will look at the government's records and discuss the matter again on August 11.
