Lavasa Calls for Stronger NOTA Implementation in Elections
Ashok Lavasa, a former election commissioner, thinks the 'None of the Above' (NOTA) option on ballots could be better.
He suggests making NOTA more powerful, as it currently doesn't change election outcomes.
He proposes that if NOTA gets the most votes, there could be a new election.
Lavasa also mentioned a minimum vote threshold for a candidate to win and encouraging internal democracy in political parties for better candidate selection.
He believes voting is a right of the people and the way they want to exercise their right is important.
Ashok Lavasa advocated for giving NOTA more impact in elections.
Lavasa spoke at a webinar organized by the ADR.
The Supreme Court introduced NOTA in 2013 to improve the quality of representation.
Lavasa noted that the number of candidates with criminal backgrounds has increased.
He suggested considering re-elections if NOTA receives the most votes.
