India Proposes Red Front-Pack Warnings for High-Nutrient Foods

India wants packaged foods and drinks to show red warnings when they contain too much sugar, salt or saturated fat.

The warning would look like a red hexagon on the front of the package.

Under the proposal, it would usually be used when at least two of these nutrients are high.

Health activists and the Supreme Court have urged stronger labels.

They say clear warnings could help people make healthier choices, especially children.

Food companies say the symbols could confuse people and might not change what they eat.

The regulator plans to introduce the system gradually.

Foods made from just one ingredient would not need the warning.
