The Hornbill Promise Shows Wildlife, Trust, and Shared Forests
The Hornbill Promise is a film about two rare birds named Tara and Tenzing.
They live and raise their babies in a Himalayan forest.
A filmmaker watched Tenzing bring food to Tara.
When Tara rejected fruit, Tenzing brought her a crab instead.
This showed the filmmaker that the birds could communicate and adapt to each other.
The birds also live near villagers who believe they are connected to their ancestors.
The filmmakers stayed far away so the birds would not be frightened.
The film asks people to share forests with animals and leave them enough space to live safely.
Filmmakers Safique Hazarika and Vinod Reddy followed Rufous-necked Hornbills Tara and Tenzing in Latpanchar for more than two and a half years.
A food-sharing encounter changed Hazarika’s view of the birds, revealing communication and adaptation rather than the human emotions he initially expected.
The hornbills nested close to a path used by villagers, whose ancestral beliefs help protect the species and support coexistence.
The filmmakers kept their distance, avoided placing a camera inside the nest, and prioritized the birds’ trust over dramatic footage.
The documentary links the hornbills’ vulnerability to broader questions about conservation, habitat loss, and how much space people will leave for wildlife.
