NGT Issues Notice to BBMB, Punjab Over Floods
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has sent a notice to the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and the Punjab government because of repeated flooding in Punjab.
A group called the Public Action Committee (PAC) filed a complaint saying that the BBMB stopped sharing important information about the dams, like how much water is coming in and going out.
This information is supposed to be public according to the Dam Safety Act.
The PAC also said that the dams are being operated in a way that could cause more floods.
The NGT will hear more about this in March 2026.
The PAC is worried about the safety of the dams and wants the government to take steps to prevent more flooding.
NGT issued notice to BBMB and Punjab over recurring floods and concerns about dam operations and data transparency.
PAC alleges BBMB stopped sharing critical dam operation data, which is mandated by the Dam Safety Act, 2021.
PAC claims reservoir operation targets are arbitrary and unscientific, contributing to recent floods in Punjab.
NGT directed issuance of notice to respondents and will hear the case in March 2026.
PAC raised concerns about the structural behavior of the Bhakra Dam, citing recorded deflection at high reservoir levels.
