Thousands Protest AfD Youth Wing Launch
On November 29, 2025, thousands of people protested in Giessen, Germany, against the launch of a new youth group for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
The protestors blocked roads and delayed the meeting, which was supposed to start at 10 a.m.
but didn't begin until after 11:30 a.m.
The new youth group, called Generation Germany, replaces an old group that was dissolved because it was considered extremist.
Some people support the AfD and want to make changes in the country, while others protest against the party's ideas and want to promote diversity and stop hatred.
Police used pepper spray and water cannons to control the crowd, and a few officers were slightly injured.
The AfD leaders criticized the protests, calling them undemocratic.
Thousands of protestors blocked access to the AfD's new youth wing launch event in Giessen, delaying the meeting by over two hours.
Police estimated 25,000–30,000 protestors, with up to 5,000 officers deployed, and used pepper spray and water cannons to manage the crowd.
The new youth wing, Generation Germany, replaces the disbanded Young Alternative and will be under tighter party control, open to members under 36.
Jean-Pascal Hohm, a regional lawmaker classified as a right-wing extremist (a label he denies), was elected unopposed as the leader of Generation Germany.
AfD leaders criticized the protests as undemocratic and claimed they are being unfairly targeted by extremists, while protestors view the youth wing as a platform for radicalization.
