TGCSB Action Secures Rs 85.20 Lakh in Digital Arrest Scam
An elderly man received a video call from someone pretending to be a government investigation officer.
The caller said the man’s Aadhaar details had been used in a large crime.
The caller wore a uniform, spoke Telugu and threatened to arrest him.
He also told the man not to tell his family or anyone else.
Believing the story, the man sent Rs 85.20 lakh for a fake Reserve Bank of India verification.
The caller then demanded another Rs 42 lakh.
This made the man suspicious, so he contacted his bank and reported the incident.
Cybercrime officers froze the receiving account and secured the money.
An 85-year-old retired bank employee from Neredmet was targeted by a caller impersonating a National Investigation Agency officer.
The fraudster claimed the victim’s Aadhaar details were linked to accounts and transactions worth about Rs 2.50 crore in Karnataka and Kerala.
Threatened with arrest and legal consequences, the victim transferred Rs 85.20 lakh for a supposed Reserve Bank of India verification.
The victim became suspicious after being asked for an additional Rs 42 lakh and reported the suspected cyber fraud.
Telangana Cyber Security Bureau officers traced and froze the account at IDFC Bank’s Coimbatore branch, securing the entire transferred amount.
