Delhi Airport Upgrades AI and Runways for Winter Fog
Delhi's biggest airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport, is getting smarter to handle the thick fog that comes in winter.
They've added special computers that use AI to predict the weather and help planes land safely.
The airport has also upgraded its runways so that planes can land even when it's really foggy.
This means fewer delays and less waiting time for passengers.
The new system can predict fog up to 36 hours in advance, and the runways can handle 30 landings every hour, even in bad weather.
All these changes will help the airport run more smoothly during the winter season.
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has upgraded its systems with AI and predictive analytics to tackle winter fog disruptions.
The Airport Predictive Operations Centre (APOC) integrates real-time data and weather models for quicker decision-making and optimized runway usage.
The airport uses data from the Winter Fog Experiment (WiFEX) with 85% prediction accuracy to anticipate dense fog up to 36 hours in advance.
All three main runways are now equipped with CAT-III Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) for safe landings in near-zero visibility.
The upgrades allow the airport to handle 30 landings per hour in heavy fog, reducing recovery time from 6 hours to 2 hours.
