Sikkim Red Panda Cubs Mark First Births In Seven Years
Two baby red pandas named Numa and Nuba were born in Sikkim.
They were born at a zoo in Gangtok on June 15, 2025.
One cub is male and the other is female.
Their parents are named Lucky-II and Mirak.
The babies are growing healthily.
Their birth is important because the zoo had not had successful red panda births for seven years.
Earlier, two canine distemper outbreaks badly affected the zoo’s captive red panda population.
The zoo has been breeding red pandas to help conserve them since 1997.
Studbooks help experts track the animals and protect genetic diversity.
Numa and Nuba, a male and female red panda, were born at the Himalayan Zoological Park in Gangtok on June 15, 2025.
Their birth followed a seven-year gap in successful red panda births at the park.
The cubs were born to Lucky-II and Mirak and are showing healthy growth.
The park’s captive red panda population was previously severely affected by two canine distemper outbreaks.
The cubs are part of a conservation breeding programme operating at the park since 1997, with animals tracked through national and international studbooks.
