Delayed Recognition Can Hide Serious Interstitial Lung Disease

Interstitial lung disease, or ILD, is a group of more than 200 conditions that can inflame or scar the lungs.

It may make people increasingly short of breath.

Some people also develop a dry cough that does not go away.

These symptoms should not always be blamed on getting older or being out of shape.

A regular chest X-ray can sometimes look normal even when early ILD is present.

Doctors may use a more detailed scan called an HRCT to look more closely at the lungs.

They also ask about things at home or work, such as birds, mould, dampness and dust.

Finding and avoiding a harmful exposure can be an important part of treatment for some patients.
