Supreme Court Scrutinizes Delhi Pollution and Tree Felling
The Supreme Court of India is not happy with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for wanting to cut down 473 more trees in a forest area called the Delhi Ridge.
The court asked the DDA to show proof that they have replaced the 1.65 lakh trees they cut down earlier.
The DDA is building a road, but the court wants to make sure they are following the rules to protect the environment.
The court said they won't allow the DDA to cut more trees until they see real proof that the trees have been replaced.
The DDA said they are working on it and have until March 31 to finish planting new trees.
The court will check on this again on January 19.
Additionally, the Supreme Court stressed that expert bodies must first clearly identify and publicly disclose the reasons for Delhi’s air pollution before proposing solutions.
The court emphasized that it does not intend to step into the role of technical experts but will provide a platform for informed deliberations.
The court noted that Delhi’s air quality remained a concern, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) standing at 293, placing it in the ‘poor’ category.
The Supreme Court questioned the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) about its proposal to cut 473 trees in the Delhi Ridge area.
The court demanded concrete proof of compliance with previous orders regarding the replacement of 1.65 lakh trees cut earlier.
The DDA submitted details of the steps taken so far, but the court expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of plantation.
The court directed the authorities to provide photos and evidence of actual plantation work, with a deadline set for March 31.
The Supreme Court emphasized that expert bodies must first identify and publicly disclose the reasons for Delhi’s air pollution before proposing solutions.
