Tension in Kaziranga over fishing ban
On January 14, 2024, in the Haldibari area of Kaziranga National Park, local residents tried to go fishing as part of their Magh Bihu festival traditions.
However, forest and police officials stopped them because of a court order that says fishing is not allowed in the park during Bihu.
The locals were upset and even blocked a highway for a short time.
Later, the police calmed everyone down, and the locals were allowed to get their fishing nets back.
The court made this rule to protect the animals and the environment in the park.
Tension arose in Kaziranga National Park as locals attempted community fishing during Magh Bihu.
Forest and police officials stopped the activity, citing a Gauhati High Court order banning fishing in the park during Bihu.
Locals resisted, claiming the practice is part of their tradition, and briefly blocked National Highway 37.
Senior police officers later brought the situation under control and allowed locals to retrieve their fishing equipment.
The Gauhati High Court had prohibited fishing to protect wildlife and conserve the park's ecosystem.
