India's US Crude Oil Imports Surge, Driven by Market Economics
India, a big buyer of oil, is importing a lot more oil from the United States than usual.
In October, they imported a record amount, making the US their fourth-biggest oil seller, taking over from the UAE.
This is happening because it's cheaper and makes more sense for India to buy oil from the US right now.
This is due to a good 'deal window' for trading, a bigger price difference between two types of oil (Brent and WTI), and less demand from China.
Even though this is good for India's economy and helps them get oil from different places, the amount might go down a bit in the future.
But this also shows that India and the US are becoming closer friends when it comes to energy.
India's crude oil imports from the US reached a record high of 568,000 barrels per day in October 2025.
US crude has dislodged the UAE as India's fourth largest oil supplier.
Imports are expected to average 450,000–500,000 b/d in November, reflecting market economics and ongoing diversification efforts.
The recent surge in imports is attributed to favorable arbitrage, a wider Brent-WTI spread, and weak Chinese demand, not directly to recent US sanctions on Russian oil firms.
Future imports are projected to settle between 250,000–350,000 b/d, depending on evolving market conditions and refiner strategies.

Future US Crude Inflows
Factors Influencing India's Import Strategy
Sustainability of High Import Levels
Future US Crude Inflows
US crude inflows are expected to settle around 250,000–350,000 b/d in the coming months, suggesting a potential decrease from current record levels.
Factors Influencing India's Import Strategy
India's import strategy balances market economics and trade considerations, with current high levels potentially sustained if arbitrage opportunities remain favorable and refiners adjust their buying strategies.
Drivers of Increased Imports
Future US Crude Inflows
The recent spike in imports was likely agreed upon before new US sanctions on Russian oil giants, indicating it's not sanctions-driven but reflects India's ongoing diversification and energy security efforts.
Factors Influencing India's Import Strategy
The increase is economics-led, supported by a strong arbitrage window, a wider Brent-WTI spread, and weak Chinese demand, making WTI Midland competitive on a delivered basis.
