Netflix Switches to Ad Reach Metric, Reports 190 Million Monthly Viewers
Netflix, the streaming service, has a new way to count how many people see ads.
Instead of just counting how many accounts are used, they now count everyone who watches at least one minute of an ad.
They also count others in the same house who are watching too.
This new way is called Monthly Active Viewers, or MAVs.
Netflix says this new method shows that over 190 million people see ads on their service each month.
This is happening as Netflix is growing its advertising business.
They had their best quarter ever for selling ads and expect to make double the money from ads this year.
They are also testing new ads that can change in real-time for different viewers, which they plan to use more in the future.
Netflix has adopted a new metric, Monthly Active Viewers (MAVs), to measure ad reach, reporting over 190 million MAVs globally.
The MAV metric counts users who watch at least one minute of ad-supported programming, multiplied by household co-viewing.
This new metric aims to provide a more comprehensive count of viewership compared to previous account-based metrics.
Netflix reported its best ad sales quarter ever and expects ad revenue to more than double this year.
The company is expanding its use of dynamic ad insertion (DAI) for live-streaming events.
