Karnataka Amends Land Law for Coorg's Unique Jamma Bane System
The Karnataka government has changed its land laws to help people in the Coorg (now Kodagu) district.
This area has a special way of recording land ownership that goes back to the time of the British and local kings.
The old records still show the names of the original landowners, even though the land has been passed down to new generations.
This made it hard for people to sell their land or get loans.
The new law will let local officials update the records to show the current owners.
This will make it easier for people to manage their land and solve problems that have come up over time.
Karnataka amended its land revenue law to modernize the Jamma Bane land records in Coorg (Kodagu) district.
The amendment allows tahsildars to correct land records to reflect current owners, addressing issues with outdated records.
Jamma Bane lands were originally granted by Coorg kings and the British between 1600 and 1800 for military service.
The old records showed only the original grantees (pattedars), causing difficulties in land transactions and securing loans.
The new law aims to bring the land records of Kodagu in conformity with the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964.
